Solution 16 – Propidium Iodide is a staining reagent containing propidium idodide (PI), which stains nucleic acids of dead, fixed and permeabilized cells. PI is used to identify dead cells and to quantify DNA content of e.g. animal cells to determine G0/G1, S and G2/M cell cycle phases.
Solution 16 – PI is a cell-impermeant dye that only stains cells with a compromised plasma membrane. PI is commonly used for quantitative assessment of DNA content. For accurate DNA content measurements, cells must be fixed/permeabilized and RNase-treated prior to staining. Please refer to the specific Application Notes for detailed instructions.
